Singing street Displays

I loved street displays they were probably my favorite things. You get together with a few missionaries and you just stop people and talk to them about Christ. It's amazing and I always had a great time at them and we saw lots of success. One area in our district asked if we would be willing to join them for a street display they were going to do. We set up and got to work.

No one stopped, everyone was very busy and in a hurry. No one wanted to hear what we had to say and we were being abused verbally by a few people down the street. It was bad and we were not getting anywhere. One of the Elders suggested be sing a hymn and then start again. So there we stood this group of missionaries full of faith that the Lord would bless us, singing this hymn. By the end we had gathered a little group of people around us started asking questions. We talked with these individuals got appointments, handed out Book of Mormons, pass-along cards, and some pamphlets. When everyone had been talked to and helped and the street was empty we once again gathered as missionaries and sang a hymn. Once again we gathered a little group that then started asking us questions. We did this the rest of the day. We would sing our song and then answer questions. It was a great lesson for me to learn. I had always been told that hymns were a prayer to God and that they would invite the spirit however I don't think I had really seen it in action like this before. Those who felt the spirit of those hymns gathered and wanted to know more. It was a special and sacred experience one I would draw back on again and again.

Peter - The Music Man

Peter. I will try to keep this one short however I could probably do multiple posts on Peter as so much happened with him. It was only through the Spirit that we met Peter. We were running late, which seemed to happen a lot, it was because we couldn't help ourselves from stopping everyone in our path which meant that we ran to a lot of trains, buses, houses....we ran a lot. We were on the train and needed to make a transfer to a second train. Both trains would arrive at the same time and we would have to literally book it in order to get onto the second train. We couldn't miss that train because our bus connections counted on us making that train. So there we were running to the second train when we both kind of stopped. We had this strange feeling that we shouldn't get on the train. BUT WE WERE GOING TO BE LATE so we started running again. Again we stopped and had this feeling that we needed to wait. So there we stood and watched as the train door closed and drove off.
As we stood there on a bleek day, really gray looking is all I can remember we had no idea why we had needed to wait. So we looked around and there he was, Peter. This older man, who was smoking up a storm. We walked over to him and he asked us why we didn't get on the train. We told him and then asked him if he knew about Jesus Christ. The conversation was easy and we talked for about 15 minutes. We set up an appointment to meet later that week and we went out way.
Peter was a music man, he loved music and he was very talented. He played the piano like no bodies business. We taught him the lesson and invited him to Church. He didn't come at first but then one day he just showed up. We were both very surprised but excited to see him. During sacrament meeting we had a musical number and Peter was so impressed by it that he turned to us and asked if one week he could do the musical number. You can probably only imagine what we were thinking. We were excited but worried - happy but scared - amazed and shocked. Tons of emotions. We talked to the Bishop who agreed that it would be ok. The day came and Peter arrived. He sat at the Piano and 10 minutes later finished his piece. It was beautiful, not a hymn which we had suggested but beautiful.
We continued to teach Peter, slowly but continually and He was progressing nicely. Then one day out of the blue. Sister Christopher and I was eating lunch in the Church kitchen. Peter called and informed us that He was in love with Sister Christopher and was told by the spirit that they were supposed to get married.
We quickly set up an appointment with him and Elders where we taught about the Holy Ghost, and how we learn to recognize it and what it means. We met a few more times with him, and the Elders and we started having the elders teach the lessons but we were still there. When we stopped going so did Peter. The Elders tried to keep in contact with him but he cut all ties.

We learned after this point that we really needed to be careful who we taught and that we needed to give men to the Elders. This meant that a lot of the people we found we gave over to the Elders. It's ok as the gospel is the same no matter who you hear it from.

Berry Picking

As missionaries we find the greatest joy in the simple things. For example bubble gum/candy machines on random corners or that the rain started right after we made it inside. Those little tender mercies we seemed to find every day.
We were visiting a sister in one of the outskirt towns and the train only came every few hours. We has spent the entire day tracking in the area and had missed our planned train home so had spent more our planned in that area. By the time we arrived at the train station we were starving. I don't know why we hadn't eaten during the day but we seemed to have missed lunch that day along with the train. So there we are at this tinny little train stop a little down on our selves. When all the sudden we looked over and there on the side of the train stop were some berry bushes. They were beautiful and full of these great looking berries.
I was not daring enough to the berries as I didn't know if they were poisoned or not and I wasn't about to test that fact. However Sister Christopher was without fear. She reached in and picked those berries and they were delouses.
Here was Sister Christopher reaching in and eating these berries unaware of anything wrong. When however we got back on the train here arms were all scratched up and she was breaking out. We are not sure what the plant was but it created a rash on Sister Christopher's arms. Pour Sister Christopher was so sad and her arms irritated her the rest of the day but we had enjoyed some really good berries.

That sounds like such a sad story it wasn't supposed to be I wanted to show that we really did see some wonderful Tender Mercies providing berries was just one of many.
