Stories are Best

As missionaries it is against the rules to hold any child. This is done for multiple reason and is something that should be strictly followed. This doesn’t mean you can’t play with them. There was a family Sister Christopher and I used to visit. The husband and wife were struggling and so our plan was to teach the basic principles of the gospel to help bring them closer to Christ. They had five wild children who were absolutely crazy but so sweet. We planned for these lessons very carefully as we know we wouldn’t keep the attention of parents or children for very long. What usually ended up happening was that we would divide and conquer. One of us would sit on the floor and play with the children. The other would help set the table and speak with the parents. We got really good at intertwining our lessons with the conversation.  So when we would get to the end of the meal and share our lesson we were quick and to the point as we had already been discussing it throughout our entire visit.
One particularly rowdy day with the children Sister Christopher pulled out a book from her bad and caught every ones attention. She read the story and then as she finished she asked what they thought. We then had a 15 minute lesson on how God loves us and knows each of us individually. It was beautiful and the spirit was felt by everyone.
My point in sharing this story is to say that sometimes the most spiritual experiences don’t come from a well-planned out lesson but from a simple children’s book.
